Breaking Back: DenBoer Overcomes Slander to Win at Life

Associated Press

Who is Dr. John DenBoer? If you asked him that 5 years ago, he would have easily replied “CEO.” If you asked anybody, after seeing one of his many National or International talks, they probably would have identified the Geriatric Neuropsychologist and Sports Psychology guru as an innovative and dynamic person – if not a little weird.

If you ask the former entrepreneur to describe himself now, he says – clearly and convincingly – that he primarily identifies as a Dad.

The last few years have not been kind to anybody – particularly Dr. Denboer. In 2019 the business that he founded and grew into a $50MM company, Smart Brain Aging, Inc. (now Dementia Prevention Systems) was the victim of a hostile takeover, with a former investor turned business rival taking control of DenBoer’s employees and terminating many of his clients. It was a tremendously demoralizing and trying time for DenBoer and his family.

When DenBoer fought back, hiring a lawyer and spending over $150,000 in legal fees in a year, this nemesis engaged in repeated online slander and defamation. This greatly impacted both DenBoer’s personal and professional reputation.

It also caused him to ultimately lose the business that he had worked so hard for – a business built in his grandmother’s memory.

Additionally, he was the victim of libel, and is currently pursuing a lawsuit against The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. This was spurned by a political rival in DenBoer’s bid for a volunteer Trustee position in his local village.

Luckily for consumers some of his technique and teachings are still found on-line, including his documentary and book, both titled “This is Dementia.” (www.thisisdementia.com).

Denboer says that although his most important tole continues to be his one as a father, he is gradually forming strategic operational relationships in the senior care community.
