It is difficult to watch someone you care about go through dementia, especially if you are the caregiver. This can be a very overwhelming experience and you may need extra support. This is where support groups come in and can help you with the difficult task.

Did you know that there are 16 million dementia caregivers in the United States? It can be very beneficial to talk with each other for support. The following are benefits for attending a support group geared towards dementia caregivers.

  • Feeling less lonely and less judged – a support group is a great place to be social with others who understand what you are going through
  • Reduce depression and anxiety – being a caregiver can bring on depression and anxiety. A support group can offer you tools to help with these
  • Gain a sense of control – you are able to talk openly in a support group, which gives you a sense of control over your emotions
  • Improve communication – learn ways to improve communication between you and your loved one with dementia
  • Learn coping skills – support groups will offer coping skills to help you get through difficult situations
  • Better understanding – a support group can give you information to help you understand dementia a little better
  • Make friends – if you are unable to get out because you are often tied down with caregiving, a support group can be a great place for you to meet friends. Plus, it is something that you can look forward to and do for you!
